In
learning to use the I-Ching people, in general, are often baffled by
the use of obscure and mystifying terminology. Most people
translating I-Ching texts are basically doing just that -
translating, or on the other hand some people put out so - called
contemporary renderings that amount to no more than their own
subjective opinion of what they think the hexagrams might mean.
The I-Ching is both objective and subjective in its meaning and its
practice. Quite frankly it is impossible to learn the I-Ching from a
book. After practicing the I-Ching through movement (i.e., Tai -
Chi/Chen style) for more than 30 years I’m just beginning to get
the hang of it. The hexagrams of the I-Ching are living images
captured in moving lines, once you understand how to decode these
images it is as if you enter into a whole new dimension of awareness
that is rich with meaning and significance. My aim in offering
training in the I-Ching is to assist you in connecting with the
essential message of the hexagrams from an objective standpoint, as
well as how to use this information to work with and develop your
own unique personal perspective, and then, of course, how to move
from the objective standpoint to the personal view fluidly and
easily.
At the basic level it is very useful to look at the visual image
associated with each hexagram. The image is like a portal through
which one enters to get the basic message of the corresponding
hexagram. The pictorial representations of the hexagrams have an
upper image and a lower image all in one view. These upper and lower
images are the trigrams that make up any and all hexagrams and when
they combine in this way are each transformed into an overall
unified picture that is the hexagram.
The eight trigrams also have a direct relationship to the eight
layers in the multi - dimensional human design system, and further
when those trigrams are blended in a specific way to form hexagram
groupings ( also of eight each) those groupings correspond to the
associated worlds of multi-dimensional human design. The hexagrams
are made up of 6 lines originally known as harmonies (between two
poles i.e., body - mind, mind - will, will - chi, etc.). When one of
the lines changes, that is, it is imprinted by a certain planet,
from the human design perspective, it actually takes on the
characteristics of a different hexagram. If this change is accepted
the original harmony is maintained, but in the vast majority of
cases there is present some kind of resistance. In this case the
energy is transferred unconsciously to the new hexagram and its six
lines function at the level of color. In my understanding color at
this level has a direct correspondence to the negative emotional
states of the 6 bardos in Tibetian mythology. The remedy for this
condition is to make the individual fully aware of their underlying
motivation. Once this motivation is brought into the full light of
awareness it is seen to dissolve and from that point holds no power
over the individual anymore. Also in the Tibetian tradition from the
Great Perfection teachings there are the 6 lamps one for each
negative emotion. This is actually the basis of all therapeutic
intervention.
This can continue to the level of tone in which there are 6
corresponding logical levels of application each of which functions
according to its own governing principle or law. The point being
here is to re - align with that natural law and the way in which
this is done is to tune in to the corresponding consciousness state
through hypnotic trance work. At the base level there are the 5
vowel dimensions corresponding to the 5 universal elements that make
up everything in the universe. At this level meditation is the
method needed to liberate the individual from their own self -
imposed illusion of separateness.
There is also I-Ching from the cosmological standpoint where out of
the basic and fundamental unity of Tai - Chi (Yin - Yang symbol) a
process of division occurs at various stages (i.e.,1 - 2 - 4 - 8 -
16 - 32 - 64) that reaches its full differentiation with the 64
hexagrams. This process mirrors a kind of ray of creation that
extends from the original source to the full diversification of
everything in creation down to the smallest particles.
There is a wealth of information contained in the I-Ching and all
that it implies, yet there are only a few fundamental principles
that need to be grasped in order to begin working with it in a
practical way.
