Where Does Tai-Chi Come From?
The ancient Taoists discovered many
methods of attuning the mind body and spirit with the energy of
nature. By doing so they uncovered a wealth of information
about the world around them and within them. This information
has led to many breakthroughs and advancements in all areas of human
endeavor from medicine and astrology to science, art, and theatre to
name a few.
Chi, the invisible life force that
moves through everything, was the key ingredient in all of this. By
observing the way things move and change in nature, society, and
their own bodes they saw that each life form has it's own rhythm and
intensity inherent in the way that it expresses itself. That unique
flow that each life form possesses is a blending of the Chi that
moves through them and their own constitution or design. The Taoists
saw that everything in life, nature, and the universe, follows
it’s own pattern of transformation through different phases of
life, and that by imitating these patterns they were able to share
in the experience, or resonate in harmony with all types of life
forms and natural processes.
As a result of these practices the
Taoists found that each pattern had a specific affect on some
corresponding part of their body, mind, spirit or some combination
there of. So they began to catalog all of this, the result of which
is named Chi-Kung or the skill of working in harmony with the life
force, or universal energy.
What is Tai-Chi?
Tai-Chi or supreme ultimate is a
combination of many different styles of Chi-Kung. It was designed as
a comprehensive expression of man’s transformation leading to the
realization of himself as a complete universe within himself, and
that includes everything involved in the evolution of the life force
up to the creation of man. According to the ancient Taoists
this meant everything in the universe. It was only by
realizing himself as a complete whole that man could begin to lead
the life he was created for in a harmonious and peaceful way. It is
only because man is ignorant of this that the continues to destroy
both himself and the world around him. Tai-Chi is meant to bring one
back into harmony with oneself, follow human beings, and the world
within which we all live. It is then possible to share the
talents and gifts one has with the world in a way that is both
enriching and personally satisfying
What Does Tai-Chi Do?
Tai-Chi promotes health and
well-being physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is a great
system of physical conditioning at any level of fitness as it can be
adjusted to the individual needs of anyone practicing it. It is a
proven and workable method of self-defense. It can lead to a deep
understanding of the body-mind complex and how to heal and integrate
it’s many diverse parts. It is also a complete system of
meditation leading to total transformation. Hence Tai-Chi and
associated Chi-Kung practice can assist in making one healthy and
whole, at ease with oneself and the world, looking forward to the
challenges life brings as they are the means by which one’s
talents and gifts are discovered, developed, and shared with others.
How Is Tai-Chi Practiced?
Tai-Chi is a low impact workout
requiring no special equipment. The movements are circular, soft,
slow, even, and relaxed. All movements are performed from a standing
position with the spine upright and vertical. All of the joints of
the body are kept relaxed and opened so as to allow movement to flow
as effortlessly as possible. It is almost as if the movements are
being performed under water. Eventually one learns how to bring ones
breath in to harmony with the execution of the movements so that it
is like a kind of moving Yoga.
Who Can Practice Tai-Chi?
There really is no age limit when it
comes to the practice of Tai-Chi. Each individual is encouraged to
practice the movements at their own level of skill, ability, and
physical fitness.
